Honest answers to real questions.
Everything you're wondering about Fitzpatrick response, ingredients, and how Sabbskin works.
fitzpatrick
Your skin type (dry, oily, combination) describes oil production and moisture levels. Your Fitzpatrick response describes how your skin reacts to UV light — specifically how likely it is to burn, tan, produce excess melanin after inflammation, or develop post-mark darkening after a breakout. Two people can both have "oily" skin but have completely different Fitzpatrick responses. Sabbskin rituals are organized by Fitzpatrick response because that's what determines how your skin reacts to actives, LED wavelengths, and sun protection needs.
No. Fitzpatrick typing is a photoresponse framework developed for clinical dermatology and cosmetic guidance — it is not a medical diagnosis, not an ethnicity label, and not a fixed rule. It's a tool for understanding how your skin tends to respond to UV exposure and stress. Individual responses vary, and your Fitzpatrick range can shift with age, season, and health.
Our 2-minute Skin Response Quiz covers your burn/tan history, how your skin responds after a breakout or inflammation, and how quickly you tan. It takes about 7 questions to place you in a Fitzpatrick range. No email required. You'll get a suggested ritual at the end — no obligation to purchase.
Ingredients & Actives
i68™ is Sabbskin's eight-dimension skin memory framework. It maps how your skin holds onto past experiences — from melanin production after UV exposure, to how your barrier rebuilds after inflammation, to how pigment-responsive your skin is to stress. It's not an ingredient, it's a framework used to guide formula development and ritual sequencing. When you see i68™ on a product, it means the formula was developed within this framework.
That was the starting point for every Sabbskin formula. Many mainstream actives — especially higher-percentage retinols, aggressive chemical exfoliants, and some brightening ingredients — can cause more pronounced post-inflammatory darkening in melanin-rich skin. Our formulas are designed with that response in mind: encapsulated delivery, gentler percentages, and barrier-first formulation. Every active decision starts with the question: how does this behave on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin?
Generally yes, but timing and layering matter. Retinaldehyde is PM-only — use it on clean skin before your moisturizer. Vitamin C is best used in the morning. Niacinamide pairs well with retinaldehyde and can actually support barrier function alongside it. Avoid using strong AHAs/BHAs on the same nights as retinaldehyde when you're starting out — alternate nights works well for most people.

LED Devices
Red light (620–700nm) became the most widely marketed wavelength because it penetrates the dermis and supports collagen-related appearance goals. Yellow light (570–590nm) works closer to the skin's surface — supporting an even-looking, calm-appearing skin ritual. For melanin-rich skin, yellow is particularly relevant because it is less likely to trigger unwanted melanin activity than some red wavelengths. Sabbskin's yellow-light-first approach puts this wavelength at the center of the ritual, not as an afterthought.
For the Skinimalist™ Yellow-First LED Face Mask: most people use it 3–5 times per week for the first 8 weeks, then maintain with 2–3 sessions per week. For the Tressfull™ Pulsed LED Hair Growth Cap: consistent use of 3–4 sessions per week is typical. Individual responses vary and we'd always recommend following the device-specific guide included with your order.
